Decor Trends for 2024

Blog Decor Trends for 2024

Hello there to all the decor enthusiasts! As we roll more and more into 2024, this is the year where we fully embrace the art of slow decorating—because let’s face it, our home is a journey, not a destination. At The Unload, we believe in curating spaces that evolve with you, not just changing everything with every passing season.

This being said, in this post, we’ve sifted through the buzz to bring you a handful of home decor trends that we actually LOVE. We’re skipping the flash-in-the-pan trends and focusing on the ones that seamlessly weave into your life and fit into this slow decor philosophy. Your space should reflect your journey, so we want to help you stay up to date with interior design trends, while at the same time, curating something atemporal – helping you build that narrative over the years, not just one season.

If your space is your canvas, each addition tells a part of your unique story.

Vintage is your best friend

there’s honestly nothing that makes me feel happier than when a home mixes old and new in an actual nice way. Not just the look makes the house automatically have more personality, warmth and a cozy feeling, vintage is so better in many ways! More sustainable, very often cheaper and the quality is usually higher than cheap modern furniture. SIDENOTE: Please, do NOT buy modern furniture that tries to imitate vintage ones. Everyone can tell what you tried to do, and we can tell you failed. Just buy vintage.

Add color in smart ways

At The Unload  we do NOT subscribe to the minimalist, beige home that plagues society nowadays. However, we are not maximalists either. We love a good balance of organization and negative space, with a little messiness that the lived-in look and a good personality bring to a home. This brings us to color – we love a good color moment, specially a bold one, even if small. But we know lot a people are not fans, so we encourage you to try it out in smart ways. Maybe add a colorful beer cart in display that you can easily remove once you get tired. Start experimenting with color and soon you will become a fan!

Don't overlook textures

There are some occasions where we do appreciate a more minimalistic take on a home, or on a specific room, specially if the architecture goes well with that sort of decor. However, if you do reduce the color scheme and the amount of objects, please make sure you give extra love to textures! This will be the thing that brings warmth and a coziness to your space. Don’t overlook natural materials, warm toned wood and different types of fabrics!

Explore different metals

We do love to mix metals and not just in decor! Long are the days where all the faucets, appliances and light fixtures had to match in terms of metals. Personally we love a chrome, specially when paired with a dark vintage piece, but feel free to explore your favorites!

Art should be unique

We do love small artists and to have unique pieces, however, you don’t even need to commission a piece or to be an art enthusiast! The things that mean the most to you will make the best art for your home! That restaurant you love to go with friends? Frame the menu! The drawing your niece gave you for Christmas? Put it on your walls! You can change things often and play around with colors and concepts! Most importantly, just have fun!

Bring nature in

This point means a lot to us, since nothing makes our house feel fresh and clean like fresh flowers on the weekend! However if you don’t have a back garden or you don’t really want to pay for fresh flowers all the time, bring nature in by having some plants around! We are not crazy plant lovers, one or two small pots will make all the difference to your home, and you can find some species who don’t require a lot of attention if you are a plant killer!

Light is everything

This is probably our favorite point of this entire post. LIGHT IS ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING! Nothing beats good natural light, the rays of sun entering the home in the morning or the warm light from the sun set. However, if you are not blessed with incredible sun exposure in your home, fear not! You could have the ugliest house, but if you nail lighting, you are half way there to make everything work in your favor! Our first recommendation is to ditch the bright ceiling lights and start collecting little lamps and cool lampshades! Nothing will make your mood and the vibes of your house change faster than a good lighting situation. Candles are always a plus as well, so we strongly recommend them as well!

Embrace dark wood

For many years now, white or light wood, that almost-washed-oak look had a chokehold on society and seemed like less contrast was better. Specially when the pairing with grey floors and only white walls was the look everyone was trying to do, to achieve that minimalistic (and no personality) look. We are here to let you know that all of that is out! Dark wood was really famous in previous decades and for a good reason! It brings depth and sophistication to a space, drawing the attention to the furniture and the textures. We want more dark wood, specially when paired with modern aspects for an ultimate chic look!

Have unexpected curtains

we love textiles and we think a space is only complete when fabric is included and that’s why we love an unexpected curtain! In fact, one of our goals in life is to have a full on modern canopy bed! But while we do not have the space for that, we think adding a curtain to cover your wardrobe is a great idea to incorporate more fabric, texture, movement and in most cases, save space! Or you can do curtains in your laundry room to hide the washer and drier! So many possibilities, there’s no going wrong!

Make a home that says who your are

Our last tip is the one that for us will make the most difference, not only to your space, but in your life (not exaggerating here!). We believe your home should show who your are, your taste, what you like, your hobbies, your personality! We love when you can tell something about someone just by the way they organize their books! Don’t be afraid of adding weird, unique things to your home! If you collect something very specific, show case it! If you have a thing for ceramics, then have them in display! It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone other than to yourself! Don’t try to replicate what you see online! Experiment around, have fun and discover your own look! Not only you will love your home more than ever, that exercise will transcend to other parts of your life and make your own style and taste evolve and refine! And there’s nothing cooler than that! The best design tip is to stay up to date with ho you are and follow where that guides you!
